Preparing Your Central Indiana Home For A Winter Storm
2/2/2022 (Permalink)
The weather in Central Indiana can be unpredictable year round. One day it is sunny and seventy degrees and the next day we are preparing for the snow storm of the century. While we can't predict what the weather will do, we can prepare our homes for severe winter weather. Follow these tips to keep your home and family safe this season.
If you have a fireplace, have it checked regularly by a professional to keep it in good working order and be sure there is no debris that would prevent smoke from escaping. Make sure the fireplace is free from potentially flammable items such as drapes, furniture, newspaper, etc. Keep extra firewood handy.
Considering purchasing a generator for your home in case of power outages. A battery powered sump pump backup can also help to prevent flooding if your home loses power.
Examine the exterior of your home and remove any tree limbs or other items that could fall on your home during a storm and potentially damage the roof.
Caulk and weather strip doors and windows to preserve heat.
Prepare an emergency food supply so that you have at least 3 days of food and water on hand for your family. Look for foods that have a long shelf life and require little to no cooking or refrigeration in case of loss of power. Don't forget pet food!
Most importantly, prepare to check in regularly on neighbors, especially those who may need assistance during severe weather. If your home suffers damage due to flooding, fire, or other disasters, call the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson at 317-773-0422.

Property Damage Caused by Summer Storms
8/25/2021 (Permalink)
The heat wave and low rainfall that has descended on Central Indiana have created the perfect setting for summer storms that can appear suddenly and severely damage your property. Pop up thunderstorms are often accompanied by high winds, lightening and flash flooding. Protect your home from these damaging storms by following these tips:
*Install power strips in your home to protect your electronics and appliances from power surges that occur with nearby lightening. If severe weather is forecast in your area, it may be helpful to take the additional step of unplugging these items completely.
*Regularly inspect trees and shrubbery on your property. High winds can bring down limbs and pose a threat to your roof, home, vehicles, and fencing. Contact a professional tree removal company if you have questions about the health of your trees or to remove large limbs or trees from your yard.
*Check your basement's sump pump regularly and consider purchasing a battery powered back-up system.
*Remove debris from your home's roof and gutter system. Blocked downspouts can cause water to collect around your home's foundation and subsequently cause water damage inside your home.
If your home or business is damaged by a summer storm, contact the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson at 317-773-0422. We will be on site quickly to assess the damage and begin the drying process. Our goal is to make your home "Like it never even happened."

Sneaky Winter Storm Damage to Your Home
1/6/2021 (Permalink)
When we think of winter storms in Indiana and the damage it causes to property, we often think of ice laden limbs on roofs and dramatically bursting pipes after freezing weather. While these occurrences are all too common, it's often the damage you don't see right away that can be the most harmful.
Snow and ice can slowly build on roofs and create what is known as an ice dam. This is a ridge of ice that forms on the roof and prevents water (snow melt) from properly draining off the roof. That water then has no where to go and will begin to back up and leak into the home. This causes water damage to walls, ceilings, and insulation. This moisture can also contribute to mold growth inside your home.
There are steps you can take to avoid ice dams before severe weather hits. Keep your gutters clear of debris, especially leaves and other items that can accumulate during the fall. Properly insulate your home so warm air does not escape from living areas to the attic, which causes the snow melt.
Even with preventative measures, ice dams can build up and water can begin to leak through cracks and openings in the exterior of your roof.
If you are experiencing damage to your home as a result of winter weather, contact the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson. Our trained technicians will identify the source of the water and begin the drying process immediately. Our goal is to return your home to its preloss state and help you keep costs and damage to a minimum. Call us anytime day or night at 317-773-0422.

Are You Ready For Winter Storms in Noblesville?
11/5/2019 (Permalink)
Weather in Central Indiana is known for its unpredictability. It can be balmy and 60 degrees one day and snowy and cold the next. Although it may be hard to control Mother Nature, there are some simple steps we can take to protect our homes and our families when winter storms hit.
*Prepare for power outages: heavy snow and freezing rain are common during winter storms and often lead to power outages. Invest in a battery powered or hand-crank radio so you can stay aware of changing local conditions. A generator is a good idea to power your home until power can be restored. Keep flashlights on every level of your home and don't forget extra batteries!
*Keep three days worth of non-perishable food and water on hand in case you are housebound. Don't forget a manual can opener and food and water for your pets as well!
*Create an emergency preparation kit for your family. Store important family documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, financial records and insurance papers in a waterproof container. Designate an emergency contact for family members to stay connected, preferably someone not impacted by your local weather.
*Maintain your furnace regularly. Keep a supply of firewood, fire starters and heating fuel on hand and make sure your chimney is cleaned of debris from last season.
*Maintain and repair snow removal equipment before you need it!
*Check your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace batteries when necessary.
*Be a good neighbor and check on those who live nearby who may need special assistance during severe weather: the elderly, those living with small children or individuals with special needs or circumstances who may need extra help.
Follow these tips to stay safe this winter. If your home or business is damaged by severe weather this winter call the restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson at 317-773-0422. We can make it "Like it never even happened".
Stay Safe in a Storm
7/23/2019 (Permalink)
Summer in Central Indiana means ever-changing weather conditions and a storm is always right around the corner. No matter how much preparation you do in anticipation of severe weather, a pop up storm can take us all by surprise. Here are some tips to stay safe when severe weather hits this summer:
*Listen to local weather reports to stay updated on current watches and warnings. Consider purchasing a battery powered emergency radio for use when your home may lose power.
*If you are at home, go to a secure location on the lowest level of your home away from doors and windows. If you have time, take your family pets with you. Stay away from tubs, showers and other plumbing.
*If you are outside, go to the nearest sturdy building (not a small outdoor shed). Do not take shelter under a tree.
*If you are in a vehicle, drive to the closest secure shelter. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance of lightening so do not attempt to "outrun" a lightening storm or dangerous hail.
Stay safe this summer! If your home or business is damaged by severe weather, call the restoration experts at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North, and of Anderson. We are available anytime day or night at 317-773-0422.

*Check fencing around your home to be sure it is secured properly.
*Regularly check trees on your property for fallen or dead limbs that could potentially damage your roof (or your neighbor's!).

* Wind damage (including tornadoes) and hail can cause major structural damage to buildings. Be sure to have a professional inspect your roof following severe weather if you suspect damage. Roof leaks are a major cause of water damage.

Severe Weather Watches vs. Warnings: Do You Know the Difference?
6/11/2018 (Permalink)
During the summer in Central Indiana, severe weather can pop up quickly. It's important to understand the differences between severe weather watches and warnings.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of a thunderstorm in the watch area. A thunderstorm is considered severe when it contains large hail (1" in diameter or greater) and/or wind gusts at 58 mph or greater.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning indicates that a severe thunderstorm is occurring in the warning area or is about to occur. If a thunderstorm warning has been issued in your area, seek shelter immediately.
A Tornado Watch means that atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes and thunderstorms in the watch area. It does not mean that it will occur or one has been sighted, only that it is possible.
A Tornado Warning means that a tornado is imminent in the warning area. It means that one has occurred or is about to occur. If a tornado warning has been issued in your area, it is important to immediately seek shelter.
Severe weather can strike quickly and leave devastating damage in its wake. If your home or business has been damaged by severe weather, call SERVPRO of Hamilton County at 317-773-0422. We have the training, manpower and expertise to restore your property to its preloss condition and make your home "Like it never even happened."
Stay Safe in Severe Weather
11/6/2017 (Permalink)
Storms often come with no warning. Prepare your home and family ahead of time to minimize your risks in case severe weather strikes. Follow these guidelines to keep your loved ones safe and protect your home or business:
* Keep a flashlight in an easily accessible location on every floor of your house. Check the batteries frequently and replace as necessary. Flashlights are safer than candles.
*Develop a disaster plan for your home and place of business and practice evacuation routes or where to take cover in case of severe weather.
*Always keep a battery powered radio on hand and check the batteries frequently so you can hear weather alerts even if you lose power.
*Keep a first aid kit on hand and an emergency stash of food and water.
Taking simple precautions ahead of time and preparing for severe weather can mean the difference if you or your loved ones are caught in a storm. If severe weather strikes your home or business, call SERVPRO of Hamilton County at 317-773-0422 for immediate restoration services.

Preparing for Severe Weather in Central Indiana
5/24/2017 (Permalink)
It's storm season in central Indiana, and there are steps you can take to prepare for the potential damage to your home and property and minimize the after effects should your home be hit hard by a storm.
First, be sure you know what you are covered for under your homeowner's insurance. Most policies cover damage due to tornadoes, fire, ice, wind, severe temperatures, lightening and hailstorms. However, flooding due to a storm is not generally covered under most policies. Never assume your home and property are protected. If you have questions about your policy contact your agent.
Immediately following the storm inspect your home and watch out for hazards such as broken glass, exposed nails and downed power lines. Stay at least 10 feet from downed lines and contact your utility company immediately.
If your home does sustain damage after severe weather, contact your insurance company and have your home inspected by a qualified restoration specialist to determine what repairs are needed. If it is necessary to relocate during the restoration process your insurance company may be able to reimburse you some of the expenses to do so.
SERVPRO of Hamilton County can walk you through the steps necessary to restore your home and property after a storm. Our technicians are highly trained to clean and restore your home after disaster strikes. Call 317-773-0422 - We Are Faster To Any Size Disaster.
