Time To Turn On The Heat, Central Indiana!
10/16/2023 (Permalink)
The days are getting shorter, the leaves are turning colors, and cooler temperatures have arrived to Central Indiana. While it's nice to open up the windows and enjoy the lovely autumn weather, winter is right around the corner. Now is the perfect time to do some simple checks before turning on your furnace to minimize the risks of smoke and fire damage to your home this winter.
Remove and replace clogged furnace filters. Clean air filters enable your furnace to work more efficiently and will improve the air quality in your home. Dirty air filters can reduce airflow through the furnace and may shorten the lifespan of this expensive household appliance.
Check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Schedule routine maintenance for your furnace. It's always better to find and rectify small problems before they become big issues for your home.
Even the most prepared homeowner may find that disaster strikes their property. If your home has been damaged by smoke or fire damage, call the experts at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson. We have the training, equipment and expertise to handle any job big or small. Our technicians will be on site quickly to assess your situation and make your home "Like it never even happened". Safe Candle Alternatives For Your Home
2/3/2022 (Permalink)
There are a variety of candle alternatives you can choose to keep your home safe from fire and smoke damage.
Everyone wants their home to smell nice, and flickering candlelight always makes a home feel more cozy. Unfortunately, candles are responsible for thousands of house fires a year, resulting in millions of dollars of property damage. Consider the following alternatives to candles for your home.
*Electric candles: these candle substitutes are becoming more popular due to their similarity in look to an actual candle and because they can be left unsupervised or overnight without worry of causing smoke or fire damage. Electric candles are typically battery powered and come in a variety of colors and sizes.
*Wax warmers: these flameless candle substitutes use a battery or electric heated dish to melt wax, creating a pleasant scent in your home.
*Fairy or string lights: these electric or battery powered lights are great for providing a festive setting and are easy to string up without equipment.
*Reed diffusers: if it's scent your are looking for, these are simple and require no power source. The glass bottles hold scented oils and upright reed or sticks. As the oil seeps up the reed the smell is released into the air.
Keep your home safe from fire, smoke and water damage by utilizing these safe candle alternatives. Unfortunately, disaster can strike even when we take every precaution. If your home has been damaged by fire, smoke or water damage, call the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson at 317-773-0422.
Cook Safely This Winter

Kitchen Safety Tips To Stay Safe This Winter
Did you know that the number one cause of home fires in the United States is from cooking? We often think of the risk of fire when using an outdoor BBQ during the summer, but the cold winter months present their own risks when cooking indoors. Some of the best winter meals (think chili and pot roast) cook all day long and that means appliances are on longer and often without supervision. Minimize the risk of fire and smoke damage to your home this winter by following some simple safety tips for cooking.
Inspect your appliances for loose wires and defective plugs and replace when necessary. Be sure to keep your countertop appliances a safe distance from flammable materials such as pot holders, paper towels and dish cloths. Routinely clean your stove top and oven to prevent drippings and debris from catching fire. Keep a fire extinguisher handy in the kitchen just in case and be sure everyone in the house knows how to operate it. Most importantly, never leave food cooking unsupervised. It just takes a moment for a fire to start.
Even when taking precautions, kitchen fires happen. If your home has suffered a fire or water damage, trust the professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson to be on site quickly to begin the process of making your home "Like it never even happened." Call us today at 317-773-0422.

Don't Go It Alone After A Smoke Damage
1/5/2021 (Permalink)
When your home or business has been damaged by fire, it's tempting to want to clean up the damage yourself and move on. Unfortunately, even the smallest of fire or smoke damages can have lasting implications for your property that may not be obvious in the immediate aftermath of your fire.
Soot and ash left on surfaces will begin to discolor walls and ceilings after just a few days if not properly cleaned. Vinyl flooring and wood can also be damaged, requiring expensive replacement costs if not addressed quickly. Ash also impacts metal surfaces, potentially causing corrosion.
The most obvious problem after a fire or smoke damage is the smell that pervades every item and surface in your home. Because smoke particles are so fine, they can creep into the smallest crevices and leave a lingering odor that can last for months. Conventional cleaning products may only mask this problem, not eliminate it entirely.
At SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson, we act quickly to clean and restore your property. From carpet and upholstery cleaning, to specialized cleaning of wood and delicate surfaces, we have the expertise and experience to restore your property to its preloss condition quickly. Addressing the problem of odor and smoke damage immediately helps to prevent permanent damage and keep costs down. Call us anytime day or night at 317-773-0422 and let a restoration specialist help make your property "Like it never even happened."
Winter is Coming! Tips to Get Your Fireplace Ready for the Season
11/2/2020 (Permalink)
Enjoy Your Home Safely
Days are getting shorter and the temperatures are dropping fast. With most of us spending more time at home than ever before, now is the time to get your home ready for cold weather. One way to do that is to prepare your fireplace for a winter's worth of cozy fires.
Before that first fire of the season, have your fireplace and chimney inspected by a qualified chimney inspector. They will look for signs of deterioration and be sure your fireplace is properly ventilated. The type of fuel you use and how often you use your fireplace will determine if your chimney will need to be swept.
When it's time to collect wood to burn, use dry and well-aged wood. Wet or green wood creates more smoke and causes more soot to accumulate in the chimney.
Clean out ash from previous fires. Only one inch of ash should remain in the base of the fireplace. More than that can create more smoke and impact proper ventilation.
If possible, keep a window cracked while you utilize your fireplace to encourage proper ventilation in your home.
Never leave a fire burning unattended. Do not go to bed or leave your home while your fire is still burning.
Check to be sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order. Also, keep a fire extinguisher on hand and teach family members how to use it if necessary.
Keep the area around the fireplace clear of items that could easily catch fire such as furniture, draperies, books, newspapers, rugs, etc.
Teach children about the dangers of fires and never leave children unattended near a fire.
Cozy fires are a joy during the winter months in Indiana. Follow these tips to keep your family safe while staying in. If your home or business is damaged by fire or smoke this winter season, call the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson anytime day or night at 317-773-0422.

Christmas Tree Safety
12/10/2019 (Permalink)
Keep Your Family Safe This Holiday Season
For many families the decorating of the Christmas tree signals the official start of the holiday season. Unfortunately, Christmas trees start approximately 210 house fires each year in the United States. There are a few basic safety tips that can keep your family safe this season while you enjoy your festive holiday decorations:
*Carefully select your tree - look for fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
*Place your tree carefully: stay at least three feet away from any heat source including fireplaces, radiators, heat vents or lights. Keep candles away from your tree.
*Examine your lights before decorating your tree. Throw away any strands with broken cords or loose bulb connections. Be sure your lights have been checked for safety in a recognized testing laboratory and only use lights designated for indoor use on your tree.
*Water your tree daily.
*Remove your tree promptly after Christmas or as soon as it is noticeably dry. Be sure to dispose of your tree properly- a dried out tree is a fire hazard if left in your home or garage. Find our if your community has a recycling program for trees.
Enjoy the holiday season with your family and friends. If your home or business suffers a fire or smoke damage, call the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North and of Anderson. We are available anytime day or night at 317-773-0422.

October is Fire Safety Month: Workplace Fire Prevention
10/29/2019 (Permalink)
October is Fire Safety Month! Ensure your place of business is prepared in the event of a fire emergency by following these simple guidelines.
*Reduce workplace clutter! Unnecessary buildup of paper and supplies can become fuel in the event of a fire. Utilize storage facilities for files that you don't use frequently and remove waste and recycling frequently. Keeping clutter to a minimum will also allow easier access to exits and emergency equipment in case a fire does occur.
*Test sprinklers annually and smoke detectors monthly. Never stack or store items in a way that blocks sprinklers.
*Be sure each employee area has clear exit diagrams and a well lit floor plan. Discuss your company's evacuation plan with your employees.
*Make sure there are an adequate number of working fire extinguishers and be sure all of your employees know how to use them.
*Take care of electrical or wiring problems immediately. Don't overload circuits or extension cords and have a qualified electrician replace frayed or damaged wiring ASAP.
Following these simple tips can make your workplace a safer place in the event of an emergency. If your home or business does experience a fire event, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County, of Indianapolis North, and of Anderson at 317-773-0422. Summer Fire Safety
7/8/2019 (Permalink)
Many people think of winter as the peak season for damage to property caused by fire, but the summer months provide a variety of opportunities for fire and smoke damage to your home. One reason for this is severe weather: lightening strikes are most common during the summer months and this combined with drier conditions can be a perfect recipe for a dangerous summer fire. Keep your family and property safe from fire related damage and injuries this summer by following some simple preventative measures:
* When building a campfire or firepit, be sure to keep your fire away from your home, deck or backyard play structures. Designate someone to be in charge of the fire until it is completely out-never go to bed while a fire is still smoldering.
* Similarly, keep your grill a safe distance from your home or deck. Keep a portable fire extinguisher near your kitchen or outside cooking area and teach all family members how to use it in case of emergency.
* Minimize the risk of property damage due to lightening strikes or man-made fires by regularly inspecting your home's exterior for build up of leaves and limbs that can ignite and spread flames.
* Keep your family safe by creating and practicing an escape plan in case of a fire emergency. Designate a meeting place a safe distance from your home.
* Check your smoke detectors monthly to be sure they are in working order and replace batteries as needed.
Summer months are great times to relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Even when following every precaution, disaster can strike your home or place of business and we are here to help. Call us day or night at 317-773-0422.

October is Fire Prevention Month - Fire Safety for Children
10/22/2018 (Permalink)
October is Fire Prevention Month and we at SERVPRO of Anderson want to pass along some basic fire safety tips for you and the smallest members of your family.
*Teach children to never play with matches or lighters. Make a habit to keep these items up and away from young children.
*Create an escape plan for every room of your home. Practice two ways to get out of each room and establish a meeting place a safe distance from your home in case of evacuation. Practice this escape plan. Make it fun for your kids: use a stopwatch and see how quickly they can get to your meeting spot. Teach children to stay low to breathe easier because smoke rises. Remind kids (and adults) to not run back into the home for treasured items or pets.
*Teach children how to respond if they hear a fire alarm. Get low and get out!
Talking about what to do in case of a home fire is never a fun conversation. However, kids who have practiced their plan will know what to do in case tragedy strikes.

Fall Fire Prevention Tips
8/27/2018 (Permalink)
Summer is winding down and cooler weather is right around the corner. As we prepare our homes for the change in seasons, keep these fire prevention tips in mind to keep your family and property safe.
Changing the clocks for Daylight Savings Time in the spring and fall is a great reminder to check the batteries in all of your home's smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing smoke detectors in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every floor of your home. Carbon monoxide detectors should be placed within 10 feet of each bedroom door and near or over any attached garages. All devices, even if they are connected to security systems, should be powered by always-on or battery devices.
Before the weather turns cold, be sure your heating system is in good working order. Have your central heating system cleaned and inspected each year by a certified HVAC contractor. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected each year as well.
If gathering around the fire pit on a crisp fall evening is part of your plans this fall, remember to place the fire on level ground a safe distance from your home or other structures. Use dry wood or kindling to start your fire, never gasoline or kerosene. Always keep a close eye on children and pets near a fire, and never leave your fire unattended.
It may be hot now in Central Indiana, but fall (and winter!) are right around the corner. Call SERVPRO of Hamilton County at 317-773-0422 if your home suffers from smoke or soot damage.
Summer Safety Tips for Grilling Outside
6/13/2018 (Permalink)
Summertime and grilling on the patio go hand in hand. After a long, cold winter and too much time indoors, we all look forward to getting outside and enjoying the warm weather with our families. Unfortunately, 5700 home grill-related fires occur each year, resulting in injury and more than $37 million in property damage. Keep your family and home safe this year by following some basic grill safety rules:
1. Keep your grill a safe distance from your home, deck rails, overhanging branches, and people. Heat from the grill can melt siding and the grill fire can flame up, catching nearby structures and objects on fire.
2. Trim the excess fat from the meat before grilling.
3. Use a wire scrub brush to keep your grill and the trays below clean. Accumulated grease and debris can catch fire quickly.
4. Never leave a grill unattended. Keep a watchful eye on children and pets.
Even under the most careful conditions, house fires can happen. If your home has been damaged by smoke or fire, call SERVPRO of Hamilton County at 317-773-0422. Our professionals have the training and expertise to get your home back to its pre-fire condition quickly.
Even Small Fires Can Cause Big Problems
2/23/2018 (Permalink)
A house fire, no matter how small, can have devastating and lingering consequences to your home. Even a fire that was limited in size to a small area of the structure can cause smoke damage to the entire home. Smoke will travel to cooler areas of the building and leave your belongings covered in soot and an unpleasant smoky odor that can be difficult to remove. Trying to clean your home yourself after a fire can be challenging, even for homeowners who normally take care of cleaning and maintenance issues. The professionals at SERVPRO of Hamilton County have the training, equipment, and expertise to thoroughly clean and deodorize your home after a house fire. Call us night or day at 317-773-0422 and let us make your home "Like it never even happened."
Keep Your Family Safe This Holiday Season
11/28/2017 (Permalink)
The holidays are here and that means time with family and friends. Unfortunately, this is one of the most dangerous times of the year for household fires. More than twice as many open flame fires are reported on Christmas Day and New Year's Day than on average days throughout the year. There are several ways that you can keep your family safe this holiday season:
Kitchen fires are the most common type of home fire during the holidays. Never leave cooking food unattended and always keep a fire extinguisher handy. Keep flammable items such as plastic bags and towels away from the stove and oven and always supervise children in the kitchen.
Candles start two out of five home decoration structure fires. Keep any flammable items, such as curtains and holiday decorations, at least three feet from burning candles. Never leave candles unattended and always blow out all candles before going to bed. Keep candles on a level surface and utilize LED flameless candles when possible.
If your family enjoys a real Christmas tree be sure to keep it adequately watered. Even well watered trees will dry out within about four weeks and dry needles are a fire hazard. Check light strands for fraying and discard damaged strands of lights. Always unplug your Christmas tree lights before leaving the house or going to bed.
Stay safe this holiday season. If your home suffers a fire or smoke damage, call SERVPRO of Hamilton County anytime day or night at 317-773-0422. Our restoration experts are ready to help!

A fire in your home can be devastating. Avoid the risk of injury, smoke and property damage by knowing the most common causes of electrical fires:
1. Old Wiring - Did you know that the lifespan of electrical systems in homes is 30-40 years but more than 30% of the nation's homes are more than 50 years old? Signs that your home's wiring may need to be updated include an over-reliance on extension cords and circuit breakers that blow or fuses that need to be replaced constantly. Consult with a reputable electrician to find out what updates your home needs to be safe.
2. Space Heaters - These portable heaters are not designed for long-term use. Portable heating devices should never be placed near combustible surfaces such as clothing, curtains, rugs, bedding or furniture. If you choose to utilize a space heater, look for a model that stays cool to the touch and has a built in automatic shut-off feature in case it is accidentally covered or left on.
3. Old, Outdated Appliances - Never use an appliance that has a worn or frayed cord. Never remove the grounding plug from a cord so that it can be used in a 2 prong outlet. That extra prong is designed to only be used with an outlet that can accommodate the extra electricity that this appliance draws.
Even when taking precautions, electrical fires can occur and have devastating consequences in your home or workplace. If you experience fire or smoke damage, call SERVPRO of Hamilton County at 317-773-0422 day or night to speak with an experienced restoration specialist.
City of Fishers Smoke and Soot Cleanup
1/26/2017 (Permalink)
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Hamilton County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
